Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz – What kind of fuckery is this?

Most fucked up ending to a boxing match I’ve seen since Tyson-Holyfield. This is how it went.

  • During the 4th round, Ortiz managed to catch Mayweather near the ropes and starts punching him.
  • I think Ortiz got caught in the moment and gave Floyd a headbutt (illegal). The fucker is really loathable, who wouldn’t blame Ortiz to headbutt Floyd? J/k.
  • Referee Joe Cortez separates the boxers. Ortiz gets deducted a point and rightfully so.
  • Ortiz apologizes to Floyd. Referee takes Ortiz by the hand. Oddly enough, Ortiz still wants to approach Floyd while the ref is holding his hand.
  • Ortiz and Mayweather touch gloves and take a step back. Ortiz seems like waiting for a signal to continue the fight.
  • You can hear a “let’s go”, it was audible seconds before the ending.
  • Then, with Cortez not even looking at the fighters, Mayweather knocked out Ortiz with two direct punches to the face.
  • Cortez counts to 10. Ortiz can’t stand up, he was knocked the fuck out. Match is over. Floyd wins via KO.

See the 4th round here.

What do we learn here?

  • We’re getting a rematch out of this instead of Pacquiao-Mayweather. To quote Ortiz, “You can look at this a couple of ways. One is that I came to entertain the fans, and I did that.”
  • Well, fans booed the hell out of this. That’s not surprising given the cheap ending.
  • Floyd is still loathed, yet he will get at least US $25 million.
  • Opportunism prevails. When there’s advantage, you take it.
  • Cheap shot from Floyd, but legal since the ref weirdly continued it.
  • This tarnishes boxing from a sportsmanship POV since it comes across as “sports entertainment”.

If only that headbutt didn’t happen… things would have ended different and history would have happened. Or maybe not and Floyd would have won later on by points. Guy’s fucking fast, I’ll give him that.

ESPN announcer: “Ric Flair is no longer the dirtiest player in the game”

I lol’d.
