Thoughts from watching Biutiful last night

Saw Biutiful for free last night with my cousin Javier. Also, I finally saw mirellasnape in person, albeit only for a mintue or two tops. Maybe one day we’ll talk about stuff someday again.

Plot Summary (source: imdb.com): Uxbal, single father of two children, finds his life in chaos as he is forced to deal with his life in order to escape the heat of crime in underground Barcelona, to break with the love for the divorced, manic depressive, abusive mother of his children and to regain spiritual insight in his life as he is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

  • Biutiful was biutifully depressing, but still a great film overall.
  • Compared to the other 3 films Iñárritu made, Biutiful might be just barely better than Babel, but definitely not better than his fucking amazing film Amores Perros.
  • Javier Bardem carried the film with his arms and shoulders and his face, which helped capture the grittiness Biutiful presented. He’s a great actor and that’s not surprising. I thought later that he got robbed against Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) at the Oscars. But then again Firth got robbed the year before. Politics at the Oscars, I guess.
  • Lol @ surprise yaoi between two real chinese actors. I know for a fact that Mirella really loved that.
  • My cousin thought of Barcelona as if the city was just like the Camp Nou stadium, like a gorgeous city. Biutiful made him regret of living in Europe, lol.
  • Maricel Álvarez: I’d tap that woman. Sure her character was a schizophreniac, but man, I heart her. BTW, she’ll appear in the next Woody Allen film (Bop Decameron).
  • Really loved to hear “Como Te Extraño, Mi Amor” from Café Tacuba (original song from Leo Dan) after years of not hearing that song.
  • Uxbal’s life gets worse and worse through the film, you feel for him. He deals with many things in his life on top of having terminal cancer.
  • Among the people involved in the making of Biutiful, Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro are included among the producers and Gustavo Santaolalla gets Original Music credits. #themoreyouknow
